BCMF Research Team look at the Washington State Historical Society

More Hidden Histories content for you from the BC Métis Federation's Research team... Historically, the Pacific Northwest extended all the way down as far as California.

There are many references to Métis in the historical record of what we know today as Washington and Oregon. The word Métis isn't always the word used though, it could be half-breed, Michif, or a number of other terms. In some cases, Métis are misidentified completely. If you search for "Metis" in the collections of the Washington State Historical Society website, one of the results will be an entry simply titled "[Buckskin coat]". When the buckskin coat was first donated to the historical society, it was thought to have originated with the Nez Perce, a Native American tribe that was historically present in Washington but is now located in north-central Idaho. Based on the distinctive style of the embroidery though, it was revised to indicate that it was "made by Red River Metis/Cree in central Canada". The description now starts with "Long coat made of buckskin, in the style of a European man's coat, Metis/Cree (?), ca. 1854."
