This finding from the Daily Ledger, a Washington State newspaper from 1888, discusses Puyallup Indian patents.
The author argued that only 80 of the 170 patents that the government had awarded to the Indians went to full-blooded Puyallup. Apparently, the rest went to a variety of Indigenous peoples including “British Columbian half-breeds, Red River Indians of Manitoba and French-Canadian half-breeds” and one Mexican.
Notice the many ways of being Métis in the Pacific Northwest, including public mention of “British Columbian half-breeds” in their own right.
