Our research team continues to scour archives looking for references to Métis in the historical record. This includes a 1903 Canada year book that notes Métis in British Columbia in 1881 and 1901 census information.
In 1881, the census for BC recorded 25,661 Indians and h.b. In Manitoba ( a smaller geographical area at the time) the census recorded 6,767 Indians and h.b. Notice that half-breeds (h.b.) were acknowledged in the 1881 records as well as Indians, but grouped together in British Columbia, the same as in Manitoba and elsewhere.
