BCMF Research Team looks at The Naturalist in Vancouver Island and British Columbia

John Kest Lord was a naturalist who lived on Vancouver Island for a time around the late 1850s and 1860s. He wrote a book in 1866 called, The Naturalist in Vancouver Island and British Columbia. In it, Lord mentions "half-breeds" west of the Rocky Mountains.

These Métis in BC were the product of east to west Métis migration as well as ethnogenesis within the Pacific Northwest—an area that now encompasses northern California, Oregon, Washington State, Idaho, western Montana, and British Columbia. The research team at the BC Métis Federation continues to find more and more evidence in the historical record supporting both migration and ethnogenesis as the origin for Métis in BC.
